Design Brief: Welcome to the Challenge

Thoughtful design requires a holistic approach with a focus on inclusivity and relevance to the project. When designing a playground, the perimeter participant—one who may look to actively engage in a park setting outside of the standard play equipment for a variety of reasons—can easily be overlooked.

Students are challenged to design a furniture product for the perimeter participants of an urban playground that is used year-round. This piece (or collection of pieces) will provide equal value to the playground as the core products (swings, seesaws, slides) do, and students should take into consideration potential play equipment and how the product will interact with and complement the entire space and surrounding areas. The submission should be accessible for a full range of physical abilities and breadth of age groups. When choosing materials, designers are to be thoughtful of the created environment.

2021 Champion: Olivia Bloomfield

Each year, JANUS et Cie will designate a “champion” of the student design competition—someone who represents the best of advocacy in the given discipline for that year’s theme.

We are pleased to announce 2021’s champion: Olivia Bloomfield.

At just nine years old, Olivia is already an ambassador, a teacher, and a mentor, advocating for equity for all ranges of physical ability, which includes her activism with children’s charity Variety KC. In 2019, Olivia’s Playground was established in Salina, Kansas, providing an accessible space for Olivia to play in her motorized wheelchair among her friends and peers.

With her drive and passion for inclusivity, we are honored to name Olivia as the first esteemed Student Design Competition Champion for JANUS et Cie.
